ethicaledtech.info/wiki/pressbooks BASIC PROS AND CONS Pressbooks is an easy-to-use book publishing tool commonly used to create open textbooks and open educational resources (OER). Pressbooks.com allows for single authors to create books, while PressbooksEDU is a network of educational institutions with institutional licenses for the tool. Pressbooks works closely with the open education community, particularly Reebus, to make the tool amenable to the permissions of use. As outlined by David Wiley, this includes rights to retain, revise, remix, reuse, and redistribute openly licensed educational materials.
Pros: - WYSIWYG(What you see is what you get) interface built on the WordPress model and is easy for novice end users to quickly learn and use the tool - Amenable to open licensing, such as Creative Commons - Can clone a copy of a Pressbooks to localize and customize it to your own teaching - Can add others, including students, as collaborators to projects - Compatible with H5P, Akismet, and Hypothesis - Responsive customer service from friendly and knowledgable staff
Cons: - Individual or institution must purchase license
Open Textbook Library
The University of Minnesota's Open Education Network maintains a catalogue of OER in its Open Textbook Library. Most of the items were produced using Pressbooks, and member institutions or consortia get a trial sandbox version with their membership.
UC Berkeley Open Book Publishing
[UC Berkeley Open Book Publishing UC Berkeley Open Book Publishing] is an example of an established institutional use of Pressbooks. From their homepage you can scan their collection of OER and notice how UC Berkeley affiliates can establish Pressbooks accounts using their university credentials.
